But that image only describes half the picture. There&#039;s another, much quieter response from the nervous system that almost no one mentions, and you&#039;ve probably witnessed it more often than you realize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People who are exhausted for no apparent reason. People who function, work, talk, and keep going while, inside, they feel a profound disconnection from themselves, from others, and from life. People who say things like&nbsp;<em>\u201cI don\u2019t feel anything anymore\u201d<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>\u201cI don\u2019t care about anything\u201d<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>\u201cI\u2019m tired all the time\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;o&nbsp;<em>\u201cI function but I\u2019m not there\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#039;s often mistaken for tiredness, lack of motivation, and sometimes even depression. The reality is quite different: it&#039;s a physiological state of survival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it has a name. It&#039;s called the dorsal vagal muscle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The neuroscientific basis: why there are three answers, not two<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Polyvagal Theory, developed by Stephen W. Porges, a neuroscientist at Indiana University and professor at the University of North Carolina, transformed our understanding of the nervous system by showing something that traditional physiology had overlooked: the human organism does not respond to stress in only one way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alongside the sympathetic activation we know as fight or flight, there is a more archaic response, linked to the dorsal branch of the vagus nerve. When the body concludes, automatically and subconsciously, that it cannot escape or defend itself, it resorts to this response. It is a response of immobilization and energy conservation present in many animal species when survival seems threatened. The body reduces functions, lowers available energy, and enters a kind of partial physiological shutdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the outside it may seem calm. Inside it&#039;s chaos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When the nervous system changes the reality you perceive<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Herein lies one of the most important and least understood aspects of the dorsal vagal nerve: it doesn&#039;t just alter how you feel. It directly modifies how you perceive reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The nervous system is not neutral wiring that executes rational commands. It interprets the environment even before the conscious mind can. Porges called this mechanism&nbsp;<em>neuroception<\/em>: the automatic ability of the organism to detect safety or threat, beneath any thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the nervous system enters a dorsal vagal state, the brain literally begins to filter the world through disconnection and helplessness. Reality changes color. Life loses intensity, the future becomes inaccessible, desire diminishes, curiosity disappears, and relationships feel distant. Even pleasant experiences cease to generate a true sense of pleasure or presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many people then believe that the problem lies in their life. And sometimes the problem is there. But often it lies elsewhere: in the physiological state from which that life is being perceived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The brain never interprets reality neutrally. It interprets it through the internal state of the organism. A regulated system finds possibilities where a system in collapse only perceives exhaustion, threat, or emptiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What the body does to survive<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The dorsal vagus nerve profoundly influences essential bodily functions: heart rate, breathing, digestion, metabolism, muscle tone, and immune response. When this system remains activated for too long, the body enters a state of extreme energy conservation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People in a dorsal state almost always describe it with the same words: persistent fatigue, bodily heaviness, difficulty starting tasks, slow digestion, inflammation, emotional disconnection, and loss of vitality. The body is trying to survive by reducing energy expenditure to a minimum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The problem is that a mechanism designed for extreme and temporary situations becomes, in many people, a chronic condition. Bruce McEwen, a neuroendocrinologist at Rockefeller University, documented how the&nbsp;<em>allostatic load<\/em>, The cumulative wear and tear of sustained stress progressively deteriorates the body&#039;s systems when there is no time for recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then the body ceases to live. It simply begins to sustain itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When adaptation becomes identity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dorsal vagal nerve dysfunction frequently appears in histories of complex trauma, emotional neglect, unpredictable relationships, or prolonged stress. This is especially true when the person learned, very early on, something devastating to the nervous system: that expressing oneself was pointless. Or worse, that authentically existing was dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many children grow up in environments where their emotions are not regulated, heard, or supported. They adapt by reducing their presence, disconnecting from their needs, and minimizing what they feel to maintain the bond or avoid pain. Over time, this adaptation becomes their identity. The person stops fully feeling what they need, what they want, what excites them. Sometimes, they even lose sight of who they truly are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Herein lies one of the deepest traps of the dorsal vagal nerve: the state of disconnection becomes so habitual that it ceases to be perceived as a problem. The person simply thinks, &quot;That&#039;s just how it is.&quot; In reality, their nervous system has been functioning in survival mode for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A society built to deregulate<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It would be a mistake to think that the dorsal vagal complex is solely an individual phenomenon. Contemporary society creates almost perfect conditions for chronic dysregulation: digital overstimulation, hyperconnectivity, economic uncertainty, social isolation, work rhythms incompatible with human biology, an excess of threatening information, and permanent cognitive fatigue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The human nervous system did not evolve to live under constant pressure. Nor to receive thousands of stimuli daily, constantly compare itself to others, consume alarming news without pause, or live connected 24\/7. Many people end up trapped in a relentless loop: hyperactivation, exhaustion, disconnection, overexertion, and back again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The result is a society full of functional but physiologically exhausted people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The solution doesn&#039;t happen only in the mind<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most common mistakes is trying to overcome vagal syncope solely through thought. But this state is physiological. Understanding it rationally is not enough. The body needs to experience real and repeated feelings of security in order to reorganize itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regulation occurs through concrete experiences: slow breathing, mindful movement, safe human contact, deep rest, reduced overstimulation, emotional regulation, stable rhythms, and a sense of connection. The body needs to stop feeling trapped. Only then does it regain vital energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This coincides with what Bessel van der Kolk described in&nbsp;<em>The body keeps track.<\/em>&nbsp;(2014) and by Peter Levine in&nbsp;<em>Waking the Tiger<\/em>&nbsp;(1997): Trauma and chronic dysregulation are not resolved primarily with words. They are resolved when the body can complete what it once could not, and finally experience that it is safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To live life again<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the nervous system gradually emerges from its dormant state, something profound begins to shift. The sense of presence returns. The mind regains clarity. The body feels more alive. Desire, creativity, and connection with others reappear. Emotions cease to feel threatening. Reality regains depth and nuance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then many people discover something important: life wasn&#039;t empty. It was their nervous system that had been trying to survive for too long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the body regains security, it also regains the capacity to fully inhabit the human experience. And from there, more than just how you feel changes. The very reality you are able to perceive, sustain, and construct changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The question that remains<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The dorsal vagus nerve is an intelligent response of the body when it concludes there is no other way to protect itself. The problem isn&#039;t entering it, but remaining there without realizing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the question that shouldn&#039;t be avoided is specific: if you&#039;ve been feeling for some time that something inside you has shut down, are you sure that &quot;something&quot; is you? Or is it your nervous system, which has been in silent survival mode for too long?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That difference is not insignificant.
