The five brain waves and how the first seven years program us (part 1)

Your brain is not a silent organ. It is an electrical instrument that vibrates continuously at different frequencies. Each frequency corresponds to a different state of consciousness. And between birth and death, everything we are, perceive, learn, and create occurs within a specific range of electrical vibrations.

Neuroscience has been measuring these vibrations for almost a century, ever since Hans Berger recorded the first human electroencephalogram in 1924. What he saw has been refined over generations, and today we know that the brain operates mainly in five frequency bands, each with a distinct function, each dominant at different times in life.

What is still being discussed, because here we enter more interpretive territory, is what this implies for child development and for the conditioning of adult personality.

Dr. Bruce Lipton, PhD in cell biology from the University of Virginia and a former researcher in cell membrane biology at Stanford University School of Medicine, has constructed one of the most widely disseminated readings on the implications of brain waves in childhood.

His proposal touches on points that deserve careful examination. Some have a solid foundation. Others are interpretive extensions. It is worthwhile to distinguish between them.

The five brain waves: what neuroscience has established

An electroencephalogram records the combined electrical activity of billions of neurons in the cerebral cortex. This activity manifests as rhythmic oscillations, waves that can be classified according to their frequency.

The five main bands are:

Delta waves, between 0.5 and 4 hertz. They are the slowest. They predominate in deep, dreamless sleep, the most restorative phase of rest, where cellular repair, deep memory consolidation, and the glymphatic clearance of metabolic waste from the brain occur.

Theta waves, between 4 and 8 hertz, appear during drowsiness, in hypnagogic states between wakefulness and sleep, in deep meditation, during spontaneous creative activity, and in the REM phase of sleep. These waves connect with unconscious material, deep memories, archetypal images, and intuitions.

Alpha waves, between 8 and 13 hertz. They dominate in conscious relaxation with eyes closed, in relaxed but alert awareness, in flow states. They are the waves of tranquil consciousness. You are not sleeping. You are not struggling. You are present, calm.

Beta waves, between 13 and 30 hertz, are the waves of active wakefulness. They are associated with analytical thinking, conversation, decision-making, and the execution of cognitive tasks. Most of your waking day takes place in this phase. High beta waves, above 20 hertz, are associated with anxiety, stress, racing thoughts, and rumination.

Gamma waves, above 30 hertz, reaching up to 100 hertz. The fastest. Associated with high-level cognitive processing, integration of information from multiple brain regions, and with deep meditative states where one experiences what is called unitive consciousness. Studies with Tibetan monks conducted by Dr. Richard Davidson, neuroscientist and professor of psychology and psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, documented the sustained presence of exceptionally high-amplitude gamma waves in practitioners with more than ten thousand hours of meditation.

These five bands are the standard framework for clinical electroencephalography. They are not theory. They are direct observations of the instrument.

What neuroscience has confirmed about child development

This is where Dr. Lipton's theory has a real, albeit simplified, basis.

Pediatric electroencephalography studies have precisely documented how dominant brainwave patterns change throughout development. The so-called posterior dominant rhythm, which in adults is between 8 and 10 hertz (alpha), is much slower in very young children.

A newborn has a predominance of delta waves while awake. This is not a coma. It is their natural state. During the first few months, the brain is organizing basic connections, establishing the fundamental neural architecture.

Around the first year, delta activity gradually transforms into theta. The waking hours of a child between one and six years old show a clear predominance of theta waves, with delta still present. The dominant rhythm subsequently reaches 6 hertz at one year, 7 hertz at two years, and 8 hertz at three years.

A study published in 2021 in Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience analyzed EEGs from 96 participants between the ages of 3 and 24 and confirmed that early childhood, between the ages of 3 and 7, is characterized by a dominance of theta oscillations. The transition to alpha oscillation predominance occurs precisely around the age of 7 to 8.

This is not marginal. It is one of the most replicated findings in developmental neuroscience.

In plain language: your brain, between birth and approximately seven years old, vibrated predominantly at frequencies that today, as an adult, you only reach during sleep, hypnosis, deep meditation, or the most receptive creative states.

Dr. Bruce Lipton's proposal: the child as a hard drive in recording mode

Dr. Bruce Lipton, with a research background in cell membrane biology before dedicating himself to science communication, proposed in his book The Biology of Belief (2005) an interpretation of this neurological fact that has greatly influenced popular developmental psychology.

His thesis is this: Since theta and delta states are the same as those adults reach under deep hypnosis, young children essentially function in a permanent hypnotic state. In that state, critical thinking is offline. There is no conscious filter between what they perceive and what they integrate. They directly absorb what happens around them without filtering, questioning, or analyzing it.

Everything children see, hear, feel, and experience between the ages of zero and seven is directly imprinted on what Dr. Lipton metaphorically calls the subconscious. Parental behavior patterns. Implicitly transmitted beliefs about themselves. Attachment style. Emotional responses to events. Conceptions about the world, money, love, conflict, the body, sexuality, safety, and self-worth. All of it enters unfiltered and is installed like deep-seated software.

That software, according to Dr. Lipton, is what then runs 95 percent of your adult life from the subconscious, without you realizing it.

What is true in this, and what is metaphor?

This reading by Dr. Lipton deserves to be examined carefully. Because it has a solid part and an interpretive part.

The good news: early childhood is indeed a period of extraordinary neuroplasticity. A young child's brain forms around one million synaptic connections per second during the first few years. The prefrontal cortex, responsible for critical thinking, planning, and conscious emotional regulation, doesn't fully mature until around age 25. This means that young children literally lack the neural infrastructure to critically filter what they receive from their environment.

The susceptibility to internalizing models without conscious examination is real. Attachment patterns are formed in the early years and condition adult relationships; this has been documented since the work of Dr. John Bowlby, the British psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who founded attachment theory. The styles of emotional self-regulation learned at that stage persist. Implicit beliefs about oneself are formed then and are difficult to modify later. Early traumas leave lasting scars because the system that receives them lacked the capacity to process them.

This is all established neuroscience and developmental psychology.

The most interpretive part: the specific description of the child as recording everything in a hypnotic state is a useful metaphor, not a literal one. Children are not in pure theta all the time. They have moments of alpha, beta, and conscious awareness. The relative proportion of slow waves is higher than in adults, but they are not adults reduced to sleep. Dr. Lipton simplifies to make a complex idea accessible, and this simplification, while pedagogically useful, loses precision.

Furthermore, Dr. Lipton is not a developmental neuroscientist. His primary training is in cell biology. His authority in molecular biology is genuine. His specific claims regarding infant electrophysiology are popular science, not primary research in that field.

That said, the core of what he proposes—that the early years of life install deep programs in the subconscious that then govern much of adult life—is aligned with decades of research in developmental psychology, attachment theory, neurobiology of trauma, and psychoanalysis.

The metaphor is simplistic. The practical conclusion is sound.

This implies: the programs that run your adult life without your knowledge

If this is the case, the consequences are considerable.

During the first seven years of your life, when your brain operated predominantly in slow waves, the following were established in you:

Basic beliefs about your own worth. Whether you feel worthy of love, care, and respect. Or whether you feel fundamentally inadequate.

Models of intimate relationships. How you expect to be treated by those close to you. What you tolerate and what you don't. How you respond to conflict, closeness, and loss.

Deep emotional associations with concepts such as money, work, success, failure, body, sexuality, authority, community.

Automatic responses of the nervous system to specific stimuli. What triggers your fight, flight, freeze, or gratification response.

Emotional self-regulation styles. How you calm yourself when you're upset. Whether you can do it alone or need someone else. Whether you resort to food, substances, screens, or overwork.

All of this was installed without your conscious consent. Your brain didn't yet have the capacity to filter or question what it received. It simply recorded it.

And then, your adult life, with its alpha consciousness and beta thinking, has largely been the execution of that software. With all its virtues and all its limitations. With all its inherited successes and all its patterns that harm you without you knowing why.

One last thing

This is not a sentence. It is a diagnosis.

Knowing that a significant part of how you currently function was programmed before you could choose it doesn't make you a victim of your childhood. It makes you aware of the architecture from which you operate.

And that awareness is the first essential step to change it.

Because the brain that recorded all of that for seven years is still your brain. And that same brain, under the right conditions, can re-enter those recording frequencies and rewrite what was then stored without any filter.

For now, it's enough to understand one thing: you are not your programs.

You are the one who observes them.

And whoever can, if they choose to do so, rewrite them.
