Kindness as resistance: neurobiology of ethics in the face of aggressive power

In a world where aggression, manipulation, and narcissism set the tone in politics and society, kindness is perceived as weakness. As naiveté. As something that has no place among serious adults. And yet, from a neurobiological perspective, kindness is not an abstract moral value. It is a physiological state. And one of the most difficult to maintain.

Aggression as the default state of the threatened system

When the nervous system perceives a threat, the sympathetic response is activated: fight, flight, control. Aggression is not strength. It is the response of an organism that does not feel safe. Porges (2011) established this with the polyvagal theory: the nervous system has a hierarchy of responses. Social connection, mediated by the ventral vagus nerve, is the most evolved response. Aggression and control are more primitive responses, activated when connection is not perceived as possible.

This has a direct implication: leaders who govern through intimidation, manipulation, and fear are not operating from a position of strength. They are operating from a nervous system that has lost access to the ventral vagal circuit. It is not strength. It is a regulatory deficit.

Kindness as a ventral vagal state

Kindness, empathy, and the ability to be present with others without reactivity require something very specific: a regulated nervous system. The ventral vagal circuit, the most recent branch of the vagus nerve, is what enables social connection, listening, cooperation, and compassion. Accessing this state is not automatic. It requires inner security (Porges, 2011).

That's why kindness in hostile contexts isn't passivity. It's a neurophysiological feat. Maintaining access to the ventral neural circuit when the environment constantly activates the sympathetic response requires a regulatory capacity that most aggressive people lack. Kindness, in this sense, is the most evolved and most costly response. Not the weakest.

The physiological cost of domination

Living in dominance mode has a measurable cost. Chronic sympathetic activation increases cortisol, reduces heart rate variability, inhibits the body's restorative functions, and impairs the capacity for social connection (McEwen, 1998). Sapolsky (2004) extensively documented this: in primate hierarchies, individuals who maintain their position through constant aggression show significantly higher cortisol levels and greater cardiovascular impairment.

Chronic aggression doesn't just harm the victim. It harms the perpetrator. The nervous system, which operates constantly under threat, pays a biological price that no position of power can compensate for.

Kindness as a political act

When power structures reward intimidation and cruelty, practicing kindness ceases to be merely a personal value and becomes an act of dissent. Every act of genuine connection in a context that normalizes aggression challenges the logic of the system.

Hatfield, Cacioppo, and Rapson (1994) documented that emotions are contagious. A regulated and connected nervous system transmits signals of safety to those around it. An aggressive system transmits threats. This means that kindness has a real physiological effect on the social environment: it reduces collective sympathetic activation and creates conditions for connection.

It is not a noisy power. It is a silent power that builds social fabric where brutality and indifference seek to dominate.

Kindness is not submission

Let's be clear: kindness doesn't preclude firmness. Setting boundaries, denouncing injustices, and protecting the vulnerable are perfectly compatible with a healthy nervous system. The difference lies in the source of these actions. You can be firm from a ventral vagal connection, with clarity, presence, and non-reactivity. Or you can be firm from a sympathetic activation, with aggression, rigidity, and a need to control.

The external result may appear similar. The internal state is radically different. And so is the physiological cost.

In times of aggressive leaders, kindness is not naiveté. It is the most evolved response the human nervous system can produce. It requires inner security, regulation, and the ability to maintain connection when the environment pushes us toward defense.

There is no wisdom deeper than kindness. But not because it is easy. Because it is the most difficult and most necessary answer.
